tensioner upgrade question
 

I have a 66 2.0 which I'd like to do the chain tensioner upgrade to.
Wayne's 101 project book states that to upgrade the 2.0 I would need
Chain housings from a later motor. My question is does it matter which size motor they come from?

also are the sleeves offered for my existing tensioners worth considering?

Sorry, can't answer the first question about the chain housings.

You ask about the sleeves, I presume you refer to the spacers required for the idler arms to accommodate the narrower hydraulic tensioners? I am planning the same upgrade to my 3.0 SC, and have done extensive research on the issue. I am led to believe that you may use the spacers (or sleeves) on your existing idler arms, but a more reliable upgrade is to replace the idler arms with the newer design. Apparently a lot of tensioner failures originate from binding experienced on the idler arm shaft. The new design has a wider bearing surface and a bronze bushing insert that solves the problem once and for all.

You may be able to use the existing chain sprockets from the old idler arms if these are not worn.

early housings have only 3 studs/nuts holding them to the case. and the covers also have fewer studs, so the late covers supplied with the kit won't go on. you need '69 to '89 housings. 78 and later have stronger aluminum housings, which don't tend to pull studs or get loose tensioner pins like the earlier mag units did.
