Question regarding engine baffles
 

Hey guys,

I have a question regarding the engine baffles of my ’73 2.4t engine. After stripping the engine I spent quiet some effort straightening the dented/bent baffles, performing the “cutout mod” and having them powder coated.

Now after installing it looks to me like the retaining springs do not have enough tension. This is my first engine rebuild so I have no experience but in Wayne’s book it looks like the springs nestle to the cylinder fins. In my case they only have contact in on spot. This could also be due to the aftermarket cylinders (AA Performance).

I’d appreciate some input if this looks correct to you or if I did something wrong.

My engine has been rebuild in the past and I’m not sure on how the fit was prior to disassembly.

If you look very closely at your new cylinders, they have less cooling fins surface areas compared to the OEM ones (see pic).

A simple fix is to bend or flex the end sides of the spring upward to create the additional spring tensions needed to keep the cooling baffles in place. Good luck.

Very good catch! Thank you for the explanation and the photo.

I will cut a new (lower) slot in the baffle to get proper tension.

Did your engine have cast iron cylinders? My 72 911T 2.4L has/had. The difference in the cast iron and aluminum/steel sleeves is huge. Your 2.4L is not what I would call a fishtail spinning, fire belching monster, with a lot of HP. I would not worry about the difference in OEM vs. inference comment.

Bend the straps.

I believe I would bend the tin rather than the straps.
Simply slide them out and spread the "wings" for lack of a better term. It will help cooling air transfer as a bonus.

You are correct about the original cast iron cylinders. We'll see about the fishtailing and fire spinning once it runs ;)

That is exactly what I did now. The change is almost not noticeable unless you know what you are looking for.
