Another Smoke Diagnosis Question

I'm trying to figure out what is the likely cause of my smoking and whether it's rebuild time. Here are some of the facts:

Recent leakdown of about 4% on all cylinders except #5 which was at 9% (this cylinder had a bad plug wire and may a have been flooded with gas at time of the test).

This is an early Carrera 3.0 which I do not believe has been rebuilt. It has 100k on the clock. These cars have the old valve guides.

Oil consumption is about .5 quarts per 500 miles.

Car sends out a good blue cloud on startup.

Light smoke while warming up which all but disappears once moderately warm.

Virtually no smoke while driving hard.

At DE, no smoke after pitting in with a very hot engine

After cruising on the highway, when I have to slow down and sit at a long traffic light - LOTS OF SMOKE!

Any ideas?

I would guess valve guides. My car had dead guides and after hard acceration, if I lifted the throttle and allowed the car to slow, a blue cloud would appear that took a bit of time to dissapate. If I stopped at a light, the smoke would float over the car (cough-cough).

Your leakdown can be ok since the valves are shut and the wiggle on opening does not affect this measurement.

FWIW-I allowed my car to behave this way for over a year. I used 1 qt/200-300 miles. Bad news was that during my rebuild (almost done!), all valves were worn and the guides were very badly worn.

Hope this helps a bit.
