rocker arm adjusting screws?
 

I'm getting ready to send my rocker arms out for re-sufacing/bushing.

On some rocker arms I can't backout the valve lash screw. As the screw is turned down and out it stops about where the lock nut used to be. There seems to be some dark discoloration from the lock nut.
It's almost as if the screw threads area different dia. at that area.

I could just cut off the offending adjusting screws with the whizzer wheel but...... something seems odd.

I took a propane torch to the screws to see if there was some kind of loctite on the screw but nothing cooked off.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I would just send the rockers with the screws - the machine shop should be able to easily extract them...

I've seen this a few times. I think it is from the jam nuts being over-tightened and stretching the screw. You can remove the screw backwards, which will pop off the cap as it hits the rocker. You can then run a die over the screw and pop the cap back on. I'm sure the purists will tell you to buy new adjuster screws, but the only part that might be compromised is the tip that the jam nut is on. It may be difficult to start the die on the end with the slotted head, especially if the head has been deformed by many valve adjustments.

I find myself buying used parts because I THINK I MIGHT use them for a project in the future...pretty bizarre huh?.With all the talk and pictures of Jack Olsens car I'm now thinking a "normally aspirated" R-Gruppe type car would be ahoot too.....DOH!
