Got my Camshafts back from repair/regrind

I got my 964 camshafts back from repair and regrind. Is this normal what they look like ? I expected them all shiny like polished.

Thanks
Engelbert

That's what they look like when I get them. Have had several sets now.

I asked John D. about this. He said special coating, don't remove prior to install, but verify for yourself, quick call does it.

I got a set of cams back from Elgin that had a similar look. He called it Parkerizing. Apparently it’s for corrosion resistance and lubrication. I assume it’s sacrificial.

Engelbert,

From the above pictures, cam 1-2-3 specially for cylinders #1 and #3 don’t look as good as the cam 4-5-6 lobe surfaces. They should even look smoother but not shinny with the protective coating.

Did you send a close up pictures to your cam rebuilder? I have used cam shafts looking much better than these one. These are not defective cams per se but won’t be happy to have them as they are.

Tony,
Once the passivation layer is removed they are all good. Mine looked like that, 20k miles since and they look great.

I had Dema Elgin do my 964 cams. Looked exactly like that.

I just had him do a custom grind for a 3.2 build. Same look.
