3.0 transplant into a 1970T
 

Hello folks, not sure if this is the correct forum but I wanted to ask about transplanting a newly acquired 3.0 from an SC into my 1970T. All I have been able to gather so far is that the flywheel needs to be changed out and it’s a good time to replace my clutch on the T. I am reusing it’s original 5-speed from the T. The 3.0 has Weber carbs so no CIS issues to deal with. It also came with the MSD box it was running, SSI headers and the muffler.

So basically my question is what other parts or tasks will I be facing? I’ve removed and installed the power train in my ‘77, so I understand the basic process. I just haven’t done a transplant before.

bolt it in and drive. A few things you need to do.

- Use the 70 clutch disc
- Use the 3.0 flywheel
- Use the 3.0 pressure plate but install the 70 TOB in it.

the engine wiring harness has the same wires at the 14 pin connector but they are in different positions. You need a wiring diagram to move them to correct location.

The 70 oil temp sender should be moved to the SC. they have different voltage ranges and will not read correctly.

The 70 engine oil cooler will need to be moved to the 3.0. The lower supply fitting will not match your 70 oil tank.

You will likely need an external oil cooler up front to handle the extra heat load. Especially in a humid summer NC kinda day.

the SC alternator might be internally voltage regulated. If so, unplug the 70 external VR.

The MSD will work just fine. The stock 3-pin CDI on the 70 will not play well with the SC distributor. The SC distributor needs a 6 pin CDI and matching wiring harness.

The 3.0 is great fun in an early car. Personally, I would upgrade the cams while the engine is out of the car. this is the best thing to wake up a 3.0.
