88 carerra cam timing

Hope I'm not splitting hairs here but the closest I can get with the overlap
is .046 on both sides. Bentley says .o49 or 1.25mm. From what I have read
the movemnt of one pin is .005. Am I wrong or is this gonna work at this
overlap? TKS for any advice.

You can get it closer, keep trying.

You can rock the pin in the same hole and get a slightly different reading.

Hermanator,

As you have experienced, the change in value from one slot to the next (left or right slot) is approximately +/- 0.08 mm (0.003”). So no matter how much you try to get your target cam timing dialed, it will still be off by a lot. Do not despair. You could get both cams timed within +/- (0.01 mm) of your goal by changing the timing chain and camshaft sprocket orientation. This is discussed in the Engine Rebuilding Workshop during cam timing work.

Are you using a degree wheel for your cam timing with a digital dial indicators or just the visual crankcase seam and crankshaft pulley method? They both work but one is more convenient than the other.

The best I could do on my '89 was 1.26mm. It seems to run ok.
