Chain tensioner questio
Hello everyone,
I have 2 questions pertaining to my ‘67 911. First, Pelicans catalog says their “peice of mind” pressure fed kit will work on my car but I was under the impression that I also needed to update the entire chain housing to make the pressure fed tensioners work on my car. Which is right? Second, I have read that the primary cause of tensioner failure is binding of the sprocket idler arms and that the newer wider arms solve that. Is it feasible to simply rebuild my original tensioners and install the newer arms for increased reliability? Also, would I need to use the spacers? I would also install the safety collar. Thank you for any advice. |
Yes, you’ll need to replace your chain boxes for the boxes with more studs to match the Carrera covers.
The later style idlers can be used or you can send the old ones out to Supertec to have brass inserts installed which includes the spacer. Bruce |
Thank you, Bruce. Now I know which way to go.

Chain tensioners and arms have evolved over the years.
Early tensioners had a fat mounting boss, and narrow idler arms. The factory made a wide tensioner arm to stabilize /reduce binding. With the advent of wide idler arms, the turbo tensioner got a reduced mounting boss. A spacer was used to index the narrow idler arm on retrofit. Then Porsche came up with the pressure fed tensioner. Supertec created a retrofit, full width Oilite-Bronze bushing to replace the factory wide idler arm. The Oilite bushing offered a more stable idler arm and self lubricating feature. The last tensioner pictured is the earliest version and although they look pretty good, they really should only be used as a paper-weight. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685709477.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685709477.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685709477.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685709477.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685709477.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1685709477.jpg |
This thread got me thinking so this morning I made a fixture for converting early sand cast chain box covers to accept Carrera pressure fed chain tensioners.
Stay tuned. |
As promised... Retrofit Carrera tensioners on early 2.0 sand cast chain boxes.
We can offer this service with custom made cam feed lines for this application . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686172614.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686172614.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1686172614.JPG |
