Head Studs...

Building up race motor... 4L+ 12.5+ CR. Currently have 993 NA head studs, should I be looking at different head studs? Figured I'd check before I just spend the money.

Well, I can tell you that Evelrude, Knight, Gamroth, and Dawe use 993 TT head studs in their 3.6L+ race builds.

With any part you include in your build, there has to be good reason to do so. Engineering, better and ease of fitment and cost.

There are many versions and all that I know of are good. You will not go wrong with any. The older Porsche studs were known to fail but the later ones (993) are good. I would never say they are the best as (in my opinion) you have to tick several boxes when making a choice.

We made these years ago and when we stopped building the air engines we stopped producing them. Others jumped in and pick up the mantle. We now build these expensive air engines again, and looked at every part included. We decided to make our own studs again and added features that we considered important to us. The use of Titanium washers and nuts is very important in our opinion as this material acts as an heat insulator and stops the nuts from expanding under constant heat cycles and loosing their tension. Adding a hex on the top side makes installation and height adjustments easy as well.

Everyone has their choice. The more choices the better for all.

Supertec was my choice for a 3.5 425 hp turbo 25 years ago. 60K on the turbo without issue. Three more engines since then. Why change what works?

A discussion about a "better" mouse trap is always welcome when gizmos congregate. Count me in.

In the air-cooled Porsche head stud world, is there a "better" mouse trap? Innovative thinking suggests there is room for improvement.
Why else would Neal design and produce a new stud.
We came to that conclusion 25+ years ago and never looked back.
