Installing 911 Keepers with the engine in the car
I am having troubles installing the intake valve spring keepers in cylinder #6 with the engine in a 914 six.
Any tips on installing the keepers would be appreciated. Lauran |
Clean all the oil off the valve stem and keepers. Apply grease to the ribs on the keepers.
Use a magnet to hold them while you guide them into place, and hold them on the stem while you pull the magnet away. The grease should keep them there while you carefully back off the spring compressor. |
Assuming you’re pressurizing the cyl a little to hold valve up…

Are you using P7E and P7I tools? These tools make the valve springs and keepers removal and installation very convenient. Tony |
Or instead of pressurizing the cylinder use the aircraft engine mechanic “rope trick” to keep the cylinder in BDC position and the valve closed. Easier and safer than other ways.

Or take the easy way out and put that piston at TDC. With Porsche engines, there isn't much piston to valve clearance in the first place. No rope or compressed air needed.
Grease works great with valve locks. |
For the intake valve assembly, used the P7I tool with one window opened up, Red "n" Tacky transmission assembly grease which is very sticky, a flat screwdriver and a right angle pick with success.
I am now moving on to exhaust #6 assembly which requires removing the factory oil cooler from the engine so that the rocker shaft can be removed. Lauran |
A crowfoot tool and a big screwdriver behind it for leverage will move the #6 shaft enough to get a screwdriver in the groove to continue moving it outward. No need to take the cooler off. For the keeper install, Grease in the grooves and stick one on your finger with some thick grease and carefully put it in place, rotate it 180 and do the other one. Thick grease like point grease or optimoly, etc. Never used anything but sticky fingers to do it in the car. Never used air pressure either, the stem seal keeps the valve from moving, and if it does, just pull it back up.
