Air Filter for MFI

While I'm in the mood for typing, I'll cast out into the information pool for another bite.

I currently have the K&N filter element in the standard plastic plenum for my '73 MFI system. I would love to fit a pair of K&N type individual filters on top od the plastic stacks but I haven't come across nor seen anyone accomplish this.

I have two ideas, first one is to get the K&N kit (bottoms, elements & pie plates) and modify them. My first thoughts on this would be to cut out the three openings in the bottoms, leaving the threaded mounting lugs. Then drilling the top of the plastic stacks so that I can thread a long screw up through the K&N bottoms right up through the tops so the wing nuts can clamp the whole assembly down.

The draw back to this is of course drilling holes in a pair of refurbished '73 911S stacks.

The second idea is to have new bottom plates machined out of aluminum so that they will seal to the rubber rings on the stacks and also accept the filter element. I am envisioning having the the correct lugs macined on the sides so the snap clips could still be used. The draw back with this setup is the CO$T.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Rhet

There is no performance advantage to dual filters. There's a post somewhere in the archives about this, by the Master Himself (Roland).

MFI air box -- switch to air cleaners???

Following upon John's post, there was an article in 911 & Porsche World where ITG filters were modified to fit MFI. The link below, in part, discusses the article

I was looking at fitting up the K&N's from a weber set up on my MFI and did a test fit. The acuator arm for the shut off microswitch hits the bottom air filter plate, the plate or arm needs to be modified for clearance. After reading several posts I decided to stay stock, although I'd love the extra room in the engine compartment with the K&N's.
