3.0 engine built up
Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum and new to Air Cooled Porsche. I purchased a 1973 911 with a stock 3.0 and Webers 40 carbs. My goal is to make it a track car. I’m in the process of updating the suspension. My question is how big and what’s the max power I can get out 3.0 and what parts I need to get? Thank you in advance

Talk to William Knight aka knightrace on this forum. He will point you in the right direction. He is well respected in the air-cooled community. I will be talking to him when I get to that point.

Oh and talk to Henry Schmidt here on the forum. He operates Supertec Performance.

Here is your homework. Bruce Anderson and Wayne's books have everything you will ever want to know. (search this forum as well)

With a 3L SC engine, stock with CIS pistons and webers you are going to see 200-210 hp. That’s with backdated SSI exchangers. From there to get to 250-270 hp is going to get expensive. You could boattail the crank, that’s good for 10 hp. After market P/C, that’s non Cis pistons and with appropriate jetting of the carbs and an MSD ignition with a suitable muffler. You could achieve 250-270 with existing sc cams.
Another way to get to 250-270 hp is weight reduction. Look that up searching the threads whereby 400 ibs have been removed from a 911. |

"Track car" is a term with unlimited variables. Is this a limited budget build or are you prepared to go hog wild....? of course somewhere in between is the norm but it will likely cost more than you might be thinking. Are there regulations affecting your build or is it completely open? Is there a size limitation? Will it run on race fuel or street gas? If your goal is horse power you should consider the tyres you plan to run and how you plan to stop this monster? Too much horse power will over power the tyres and make braking a nightmare. A track car like any other performance project is a symbiotic relationship....all parts have to correlate with the others. |
Loaded question:
what’s the max power I can get out 3.0 200 to 1000+ depending on how much you can spend and how long you want it to last. john |

Put 3.2 internals in a 3.0 case. That is what my 83 SC has.
