Orange sealant: Wurth=Loctite?

Hi,
A friend gave me a new bottle of Wurth orange sealant. It comes in a smaller version of my Locatite 574 bottle. Are they the same stuff? Can I use it on engine cases?

I have no idea. Might be the same stuff. However, I will ask this question: Is it worth a $10 bottle of mystery stuff to risk a $6000 rebuild?

:)

Thanks. I may just mix it with some RTV just in case. ;)

Good idea Chris. Red or grey RTV?

Make sure you slop it around good, and get good squeeze out into the case and oil passages! *tongue firmly in cheek*

Good stuff

This Wurth sealant is awsome, it seal and hardens in the absence of air so all you have to do is make sure that the surface is nice and smooth before you apply it. We use it all the time at the shop where I work and have never had a problem.
Anymore questions feel free to ask.

Regards, Kenneth

Thanks Kenneth!
You say you "use it all the time at the shop". Are you using it on 911 motors, air planes, motor cylces or what? (I like it on crackers.)

Much better on toast!

LOL
OK in all seriousness we use it on 911 trannies, BMW trannies and the 911 cases. Never had a problem, but you don’t want to squeeze too much on. More is not better in this case. But if you have any questions call Wurth up and ask them. But I can tell you that we have had wonderful results with it. And I would not recommend as an Topping for a sundae it kind of leaves and after taste. ;)

FWIW - When I split my 71 2.2 case this past weekend, I didn't see any sealant what so ever on the case edges...what's up with that?

PS: I noticed that Wayne recommends 574 for sealing while Bruce A. recommends the RTV 730 now.

The sealant is just on there very thin. Did you remove the cam carrier from the head yet? That was sealed at the factory with the same stuff (574) and you'll see just how thin it is.

separated the cam carrier and heads last night. Yes, some orange material and thin is right! Hardly any at all. No orange on the case flanges though. Scaped with a single edge razor and got some dark gray materal off...not sure what it was, almost same color as magnesium case. How do you suggest spreading the 574, with a small roller as suggested by Bruce A.??

Bob, get the Engine Rebuild Book - instructions on everything are in there.
