Before 1st start - oil pressure

About to start my 1968 911L for the first time after a complete engine rebuild and wanted to see if there was any oil pressure registering on the dash gauge before fuel and spark. After a few times of cranking the starter, I am not seeing anything on gauge. I have about 10 quarts in the tank to start. Is this normal? Does the engine have to be running for the gauge to register or can you see some movement with just starter revolutions. I seem to find conflicting comments on the internet with a search. Thanks in advance

It takes quite a few cranks before you'll see the light go out and the pressure gauge move. I usually remove spark plugs and give the starter a little rest so it doesn't overheat.

I've always been able to see needle movement on the pressure gauge with cold cranking prior to startup. This way you have instant pressure when it fires. And agreed, best to remove the plugs, gets it done faster and easier on the starter.

As others have said pull plugs before cranking so engine spins faster. You can also loosen the bolts on the oil lines at the cam tower to verify you are getting oil there before starting. I found a plugged line this way once and saved destroying the top end on one side of my fresh rebuilt motor. I have been able to see pressure gauge move in past.

Thank you all. Good points. Now just have to put a new starter motor in as mine I fear is toast.

If your starter was old, you'll be amazed at how much faster motor will crank w new starter.
