ARP Head Studs

I am rebuilding a 3.2L engine and using ARP head studs. I read that the studs should just be "hand tight" into the case. Is this correct?

as long as they thread into the case freely. otherwise I would carefully spin them in.
In reality the factory studs have a depth setting and since i use factory studs thats what I tend to do.

I'd guess they don't recommend butting the stud hard against the base of the threads in the case, which some might otherwise be inclined to. That could compromise on the case threads.

Ah, what about installed height. It seems that should govern how far in. How is bottoming the stud in the hole compromising anything? If you take a stud out of a hole, the same thead stud should go in if the threads are clean. I have not installed my ARP’s yet, and will check out the top thread dimension rather the dome end the ARP’s have.

Installed height doesn’t matter as much with arps because you’re using a nut. Installed height of I think 13.5 ish for stock studs is so you can get an Allen wrench on the barrel nut.

Installed Height still matters with ARP as the nut end is not threaded all the way to the tip, there is a bullet nose there. So, use the correct installed height to ensure proper thread engagement with the nut.

If one was to compare the lengths, I would bet the ARP bolts are longer. The bullet tip would add to the overall length. The bullet tip aides in installing the nut.

Yes, but you need to be aware of the length up to the top thread regardless.... The installed height is set to that. You can install a little "tall" and still access the nut, but if you install a little "short" you *may* not engage all the threads.

At any rate, it takes a few more seconds per stud install to do it "right"....

This is a question I get asked a lot.

In another post about Head studs, I mentioned we added features to our studs that make them easier to use. We listened to what others were asking.

We added the upper hex so the stud length can be changed when the heads are installed. If there is not enough or too much thread engagement for the head nut, the nut can be loosened and the stud turned to obtain more or less.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1697983683.JPG

This eliminates the need to measure the installed height before fitting other parts.

Your right, I should have mentioned that you still want to get them close to stock specs.

I've installed them per the ARP heights. Just seems odd such an important piece isn't torqued to some degree.

The point of torquing something is to put tension on it. For a head stud, that happens when you torque the nut at the other end.
