Oil Analysis Results

Hello all, I just received my 1983 911sc oil analysis and it is better than expected. The 3.0 has @250,000. When I first start my engine it smokes. I think it needs valve guides. I am thinking of just pulling engine and fixing oil leaks and driving it for a while. What do you think?

The slippery slope...

WIth 250Kmi, I'd be tempted to go further to reseal the case and measure cylinder/piston and ring clearances, and bearing clearances. That's if I do the job. If you go to a pro engine builder, they will want to do a full rebuild, at $20K+.

If you just get the heads rebuilt, you will also have to replace the lower head studs, unless someone already replaced the original Dilivar studs with steel. Going that far will cost several thousand dollars.

But if you don't want to spend that coin now, then do your best to stop the leaks and keep driving it as-is. Smoke on start up is not necessarily a sign of worn valve guides. If you accelerate up to high RPM and then take your foot off the gas and let it coast down on overrun, and it produces blue/white smoke, that is a sign of worn valve guides.

Depending on how long the car sits between starts, smoke on startup could just as easily be due to oil migration from the tank to the engine while sitting (which is pretty normal).

One sign of worn valve guides is smoke on overrun (coast down from high RPM).

If I wanted to evaluate overall engine health for a higher mileage engine (and assuming it runs well in general, no unusual noises, etc.), I'd look at things like
Does it smoke, how much, and when
Oil pressure
Leakdown test
