Dropped off the fuel distributor for Tony to look at. BTW, happy birthday, Tony.
For sure the air metering plate was misaligned and the microswitch or contacts for running the fuel pump has not worked in a while. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737734672.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737734672.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737734672.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737734672.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737734672.jpg |
One of the items we talked about was the frequency valve. Not sure how one tests the f-valve. Are these things so bullet-proof that they never fail and never need tested?
Also does anyone know what frequency the valve runs at? We tried powering a f-valve using an EP26 flasher relay. But the EP26 only operates at 1.2Hz. My guess is the f-valve runs at least 100Hz, maybe higher. Also we do not know how much voltage is applied to the f-valve. With our EP26 driving at 14V, the f-valve got real hot. I'm guessing 6V or lower is applied to the f-valve from the oxygen sensor control unit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737734672.jpg |
New engine harness courtesy of Dennis. It is a work of art. He was able to replace the very light OEM battery-starter cable with a much heavier hi-output alternator cable.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737906926.jpg |
I bought new engine tin seals but the rear+sides piece looks different than what is OEM. The OEM seals have a double flap and this new one turns the corners to the sides.
The channels in the car do not turn the corner. Do I cut this piece to fit in the rear and the sides? Is this the correct part? Not sure how to install this. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737906926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737906926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737906926.jpg |
The harness is even more spectacular in person.
Dennis was able to integrate the heavy alternator POS cable into the harness. The heavy POS cable was aftermarket with the 175A Classic Retrofit alternator. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1739113454.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1739113454.jpg |
Hey, Spoke: Sorry I didn't see your question RE: engine compartment seal earlier. Your piece appears correct to me. As many others have mentioned, it's a ***** to install. I remember clearly, my fingers were numb for 8 days following my installation.
I used a large flat screwdriver to pry open just a bit the tracks at the curved corners, and I had to leave a bit of slack in the rubber to make the distance around the corner while maintaining the proper shape to make the seal. I also lubed the rubber with Aerospace 303 to assist. I think I pressed the rubber into the gap, rather than sliding it that superlong length, and I'm sure I used the large flat screwdriver to assist. I slid the rubber just a bit as necessary, then after the entire position looked right, I used a hard wooden dowel and hammer on the track to close the gap that I had opened up with cut the tiny bit extra off both ends, ensuring it fit and overlapped properly with the front seal. It took me about 3 hours to do both seals. Hope this helps. |

I'll need to replace the insulation on the cabin side. What type of insulation do guys use today for insulation? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1740196494.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1740196494.jpg |
Got the calipers off. Time to ship them to PMB.
Question: Do I need to clean up the calipers before sending to PMB? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1740196494.jpg |
Moved the 930 over to the side with the lift and washed off all the dust.

Making great progress Jerry. :)

Met with Mark and Scott at their shop this week to discuss items moving forward.
Some of the items: P&C: Pistons out of round; Cylinders worn; Will replace with new. Scott says go bigger. Will try to get the HP from 280 stock to 330. Heads will need reworked; new valves; new valve guides; repair #2 spark plug that I crossthreaded. Rockers will be refurbished New Pauter rods New cams New head studs New oil pump New heat exchangers/exhaust New cam sprockets New turbo Inspect/polish crankshaft Distributor: Will look for a replacement push/pull advance can or go with crank fired ignition. Scott wants the oil cooler and oil tank out of the chassis for deep cleaning. I'm sure I fogot things. |
Great restoration project, Spoke!
I am loving driving my 930 after a similar restoration to yours (I did go Haltech EFI). Mine took 3.5 years for most of the usual reasons and I still have some small things left to do, like A/C, lol. It was so worth it though. Who are the Mark and Scott you mention? John |

I've been consumed with trying to box the brake calipers to ship to PMB. As with everything I've over engineered the shipping to fabricate custom made shipping boxes. With a bunch of cardboard (most donated by Amazon) and hot melt glue each caliper will have its own shipping box. Front caliper and custom shipping box. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742618878.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742618925.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742618940.jpg Got a front and rear box done. I'm out of cardboard. I think I need to hit up my local grocery store for some cardboard. |

All 4 calipers have their shipping boxes. These boxes are placed inside a double-boxed large flat rate box and stuffed with cardboard.
Tracking shows a 4 boxes are at the Salt Lake City post office to be delivered today. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1743253227.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1743253227.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1743253227.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1743253227.jpg |

I am very creative with cardboard and hot melt glue. I used cardboard to do the base for scenery on my model railroad. Everything shown painted green is cardboard. One picture shows some of the cardboard framework to support the scenery. I'm able to make I beams with cardboard which are quite strong. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1743253227.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1743253227.jpg |
That's resourceful!

Hi Spoke
Two words- Bubble wrap lol |
There’s not many Porsche’s more iconic than a black 930.

Also had to remove the short connecting pipe between the caliper halves. I couldn't place the caliper in the box w/o the pipe hitting the box. BTW, according to USPS tracking all calipers arrived at PMB but they were closed on Sat so will be delivered on Monday. |
My other thought is the free USPS boxes make great packaging that can be placed to cushion the item being shipped.
|
My other thought is to use USPS Boxes internally of the outside box as packing.
|
Mine looked very much like this.
|
Calipers are in shipping back to me.

Got the drive shafts removed. Will be cleaning out the CVs, repack and replace the boots. Plan to swap the shafts from right to left.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1746062260.jpg Haven't made much progress because of work on Mega Pond. I had to get this pond in so I could turn on the pond pump and get the water cleaned. Smelled like a sewer when I first got the pump running. Will have more time now to work on the 930. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1746062260.jpg |
The transmission is all together now except for the differential. Looks fantastic.

930 Air Flow Meter Unit………..
Jerry,
You dropped off your 930 AFM unit 3 months ago and did not leave any address or telephone # to contact you. I found the problem and fixed it 2 weeks later. Do you want me to send the AFM to Mark Epstein or you will pick it up? The service is FREE but I will charge you for STORAGE fee. You owe me a cup of black coffee from Dunkin Donuts no cream. Tony |

The calipers are back from PMB. They look fantastic. Looks like they are new from the factory.
The car is being moved from the lift so the 914 can get ready for a few road trips. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1752067331.jpg |
Those are beautiful!

The long block is assembled.
The p/c are 98mm. The displacement is 3.4L. Since the distributor push/pull vacuum can is leaky and NLA, we're thinking about a crankfire system with coil overs. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1753882263.jpg |
Pulled the driver side rear hub off to install new bearings. Used a Dremel tool to remove the inner bearing race from the hub.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1756330448.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1756330448.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1756330448.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1756330448.jpg |
Rear trailing arm is off. Need to clean it up an remove the outer bearing races.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757296085.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757296085.jpg I couldn't get the hard brake line off the flexible line. Waiting on flare nut wrench to remove this. Should I use heat on this fitting to remove it. It just won't budge. The other fitting to the chassic came right off no issues. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757296085.jpg Started disassembly of the drive shafts to repack the CVs and flip them. Turns out the half shafts are remans from CVJ Axles in Denver. I thought the boots look in great shape for nearly 40 year old boots. I don't have any info on when the half shafts were installed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757296085.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1757296085.jpg |
I'm adding a flat belt alternator drive to the list of items to do on the engine. Was never a fan of the 'add shims to adjust belt tension' method. As long as this is compatible with electric AC I'm in.

Again with the custom made box. This one is for the drive shafts going to CVJ Axles for refurbishing. They already have CVJ stickers on them so they were refurbished in the past. I bought the car with 114k miles and put another 75k on. Not sure when they were redone so sending out just to make sure.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1764433183.jpg The driver side rear bearings and races are out and the swing arm is cleaned up. Now to give to someone who is more talented than I to have the new bearings pressed in. Probably check with John Butz as he did the passenger side bearings a few years ago. At that time the inner bearing had blown apart. This work is just preventative. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1764433183.jpg |
