Oil filter analysis

I look at the insides of my oil filters, for my race car, frequently. I know for sure what a bad sign is, ie a whole lot of stuff in the filter or a silver, cream colored oil when changing oil. But whats NORMAL?

I usually find a few specs of metalic stuff in the back of each fold of the filter element. Is this normal for a race car? By metalic specks I mean just visable particles, maybe 5 to 15 per fold. ANy smaller and you couldn't see them. At this rate it would seem that the engine would last a very long time, OR would it?

I have only torn apart 20 or so filters so I do not have a good basis for any analysis. Any bits of wisdom out there?

I have nothing anecdotal. How about using a proper oil analysis company? They can break down all the metal bits, then tell you what's normal and what's not for mileage between oil changes.

You might want to check out Titan Laboratories for a used oil analysis. I guess a single test is $19.95 or you can get a "six-pack" for $100.

It sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Yes I am familiar with engine oil analysis. Catapillar has a similar program.

But for a quick spot check, the oil filter can be helpful. I do know what happens when a cam lobe wears off or a bearing is going south, You can see a lot of stuff in the filter. But wihtout an oil analysis is there anything else to look for?

Just curious, what kind of motor/car is it? Which kind of racing? How new is the motor/parts in it?

Its a 912 race motor. Road racing. Parts are all new, ie pistons, crank, rings, bearings. Engine case is 1966. Been remachined to true up. Max RPM is 8500, typical shift point 8,000 RPM. 12:1 compression, 110 octane leaded gas. Cam is 285 degrees at 0.050" lift, 0.55" valve lift. Redline 30 wt race oil with accusump. Oil pressure 90 lbs min at 8000 RPM. Oil temp 180 to 200 degrees F. Typical run time 10 hours for look see at oil filter. estimated HP 180 to 200 at flywheel. Measured HP 140 at rear wheels at 7800 RPM wiht functinal gererator, and 28 blade fan. one to one drive ratio on fan and generator. ( Schmidt power pully) Dyno 2000 HP is 200 ( using actual measured values of air flow and valve lift) and torque is 155 ft lb. 1725 cc. ie about 2 HP per cubic inch.

What kind of filter do you use? I am looking for alternatives. I have had some experience with an Oberg Filter now made by Racor. It is a very nice design, flat with a round 28 micron screen. The unit unbolts for cleaning and inspection with very little loss of oil. The only problem is that it is about 6"x6"X3" which is somewhat large for Porsche engine compartment. Has anyone used this type of filter and how was it mounted?
