Camshaft choice 3.2 w/itb
Hi,
I am building a euro 3.2 for a 914-6 gt project. Stock internal, ITB and efi. I have 964 cams on the shelf, but wonder what other option if good for this setup? Understand that 993SS cam profile is batter, and kind of max lift with stock cylinders. But with ITB I guess another cam profile is better. Maybe different duration etc Any good suggestion? Anyone that has tested another cam profile with good results? |
You are limited a bit by your stock pistons as valve clearance can become an issue.
What exhaust is on it? Cheers |
Hi Jeff
Will use RSR or 993 headers. Open 914-6 GT muffler with 2.5 to 3’’ tube between header and muffler |
Call Lori at Web cam as she may have a better idea of what can fit without having valve to piston issues with stock Motronic pistons. I can share there will not be a whole bunch of cams that are considered fairly "sporty" which will work, without cutting valve pockets. Realize also that with bone stock rod bolts and rods (do you know how many miles are on this lump?) you really shouldn't Rev the engine beyond it's stock 6600 ish redline, as those 9 mm bolts are The Achilles's Heals of these otherwise comparably stout 3.2 engines. Thus, you don't want to select a cam that makes it peak power in the higher RPM ranges, say passed 6200 RPM , as you should not be up there. However the top end is where the ITB's really shine(beyond looking sweet and more traditional) , thus you are in a small bind .
If it will clear a 993 SS could be a max mild/moderate selection. I fit were mine I would cut valve pockets in what you have for P/Cs if they spec out, put more cam in there and rebuild and resize the rods w ARP bolts , Rev it to 7K-7200 and be done with it, once. Know also your stock Euro Pistons are about 9.5:1 max compression(not 10.3:1 as Porsche quotes as we have built many of these engines w these pistons for Club Racing) so don't go too big on the cam for a streeter. Good luck. Kevin GAS Motorsport |
Hi Kevin
Engine is rebuilt with new bearings, 964 oil pump, carrillo rods and ARP bolts. Still it would be a budget build, så kept stock p/chttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1713475460.jpg |

993SS cam is great for stock piston |

What is your experience with that cam...good, bad, indifferent? I have a Cargraphics exhaust with catalyst behind the Eisenmann's.....hoping it all works. D |
Seems the engine design questions were only half considered before you went ahead ....You should have thought about which cam to use when you considered using stock pistons , then save the money spent for the upgraded rods (stock rods w good bolts can easily exist in a streeter going to 7K-7200)and spend for better forged well designed pistons, which would enable you to fit a better camshaft for your injection choice. So back to my original suggestion, call Webcam for the most cam you can fit in terms of duration( max lift is not the limiting factor) then ask whether the ramps(on the cams) can work with stock valve springs(likely chosen already ) and the retainers you chose to use.
John Dougherty may also be able to help guide you . Good luck. |
Or get some off the shelf pistons to work with your cylinders. Even a good used set could be an improvement ...

I'd use the 964 that you have. The 993SS will be a little more top-endy but the gains would be small. The ITB seem like a bit of a waste in this application but will work fine with your setup. The 914 is a light car so it will feel fantastic as is. Unless you want to open it up again and change pistons, just keep going. |
Same comment as Mike above. In a light 914, you won't notice a significant difference. Put it together with the 964 cams and go drive it.

But, as you know during build some thoughts might come up New rods since i had on the shelf, and has a bad experience with fatigue in a old rod that damage a engine I had iTB since I want to build my own setup from gsxr itb’s COP just formthe fun since efi Twin plug for fun, and as project to craete a jig for future builds Yes, light car. Will be fun |
