High Oil Pressure on start up

When I start the engine, I have 6 bar on the pressure gauge at 900 rpm. I then rupture the rear main seal. Why such high pressure at low rpm? Then engine is a 1977 2.7 L.

Anything change recently? Maintenance, fresh rebuild, etc?

One easy thing to check is that the crankcase breather is clear. Not sure it explains the high oil pressure, but blockage there would definitely cause high crankcase pressure and possibly blown seals and leaks too.

Maybe the oil pressure relief valves are stuck closed and not operating properly?

That’s another key thing to look at. But wouldn’t explain the seal blowing out. That would tend to be crankcase pressure, not oil pressure.

OP - Are you sure your gauge and sender are functioning correctly? If the gauge is pegged at max, for example, it could point to an electrical issue or a fault in gauge or sender. Testing with a mechanical gauge can help in such cases.

That makes sense, blowing the seal out can only be related to case pressure.
