Oil Pressure Sending Unit
As per previous thread, I'm working on a spare engine. It's a 2.7 7R case with RS pistons, and solex profile cams.
I have early (green lettering with a chrome ring) gauges in my car (although not original to the car). I have an oil pressure sender at the front of the engine - pictured. I also have the pressure fed cam chain tensioners, so I have an oil pressure sending unit housing at the back of the engine. It is blocked with a plug - also pictured. Is there a good reason to use one location over the other? allot of the engines use the port by the thermostat as a oil pressure switch(dummy light) and put the oil pressure sending unit in the oil feed port. I like to use both, a bright light will catch your attention when driving.

I had to look into this. I guess I have the luxury version of early gauges:
- Furthest left is fuel and oil level - no lights - Next over is oil Temp and Pressure with two lights - one for the handbrake being on, and one for the alternator (and or belt to it) warning light - In the middle is the Tach with turn signal indicator and high beam indicator - to the right of the Tach is the Speedo which has a green parking light indicator - furthest to the right is a clock. In theory I could replace the clock with an "outside temperature" gauge that has a light for anytime the outside temp drops below freezing. There is an alternate gauge arrangement where: - Furthest left is fuel with a low level warning light - next over is oil temperature with 3 lights - my owners manual doesn't say what they are. Either way it doesn't appear to me that there is a low oil pressure idiot light on my early car. |
I think jello is right. on cars with 5 gauges the oil temp oil pressure gauge does not have low pressure light. the 3 gauge cars which I don't think are 911. the fuel level and temp gauge has 3 lights. handbrake alternator and low pressure. my engine block is a 3.0 and has pressure take offs in the back and in the front. my gauge came with appropriate sending unit which I installed in the back. easier to get to maybe? the front I used an old sender that I may wire to a light. Early cars don’t have low pressure light … despite the handbrake light in the ‘oil gauge’ having OIL written right above it ..

You could consider a custom gauge to get the light. JBELL959 made some for me and they're works of art.

I think a buzzer is better. It will get your attention no matter where you are looking (hopefully at the road).

I installed a dual switch sender in my car, one drives the sender, the other a buzzer. This stays off once the car is running. I’m currently running 20W60, the buzzer would trigger at idle with lower weight oil.

Yer thru-bolts are on backwards, fyi.
