Elgin 314 296 106
Does anyone have real world experience with this camshaft.
The claim is huge Dyno numbers but impossible to drive on the street. Of course engine size matters but I am looking for some general impressions. |

Are those comments ("huge dyno...) from Dema Elgin or someone else? If someone else, I'd connect w Dema and see what that was designed for.

I have these cams and there is nothing undrivable about them on the street. The engine makes good torque down low and keeps making power beyond 6000 rpms. I haven't really pushed it beyond that and have no dyno numbers.

It's a 3.6 with 50mm PMO carbs. Compression is in the ball park of 10.5:1 which from what I gather is on the low end for cams like this. Exhaust is a set of S Cargo style headers, 1.75 inch o.d. with a Dynamax muffler. The engine makes a lot of torque.

I run a 306 288 102 in a track car with MFI, and it is a rocket. The cam you mention is I think one step more aggressive. I have a set of those that I plan to put into my second motor. I always thought Elgin's cams no matter how aggressive, had great low and midrange performance. Bob

I can tell you that a 310 296 is a pretty hot cam - in a 2.7L. I wouldn’t drive that on the street. 314 is close to the same thing. In a bigger motor like a 3.6 it would be a different ball game. Pretty sporty but tolerable if that’s your taste.
It’s worth noting that driveability is a relative term, even for a given application like street. Some prefer a sportier power band even if it comes with modest detriment to driveability (I fall into that camp). |

I guess you missed the part where JD said "I called all the usual suspects".

Once again. I spoke to the group of cam grinders who specialize on Porsche air-cooled engines. They were all pretty consistent.
I am looking for actual owner driving experience. The one thing that was clear from all the cam grinders, 12:1 plus compression is required to take advantage of the cam's specification. Without knock sensor capability, street gas is not recommended. BTW: John Dougherty (DRC) said many of his costumers have tried these cams and changed them out for a less aggressive cam.
