Engine rebuild , core , mag case
Sooner or later I will be planning to rebuild an engine however I want check what are the most sensible options out there. Long time and cost friendly.
Currently own 75 S engine which had already done issues with case and previous owner use case saver. ( What generally is best to use case saver or time inserts?) With mag case is the best option to just look for alu pre S or get some after or still use mag case however with case saver or time insert? Wysane z mojego M2101K9G przy uyciu Tapatalka |
Guess most prefer case savers for Mag cases so you should be fine. When starting a rebuild you might look into some extensive machining to bring your Mag case back up to specs. If you do not care about original components, a later Aluminium case from a 3.0 Carrera will work with the some parts of your engine, but is hard to source. Sounds crazy, but a complete later engine (3.0 or 3.2) might be the most economic choice in the long run.
You will have to dismantle your engine and have the case inspected to know how much it will take to rebuild and then decide what is the best choice for you. If the engine runs fine and you are happy with the performance, I would first continue to drive and enjoy. |
A 3.0L Carrera uses the same crank as a 2.7 but has different cyl stud spacing and larger cylinder bores. You won’t be able to use the 2.7 cylinders or heads.
If you are rebuilding stock, a properly machined mag case should be ok. There is an aluminum case from the early 2L 911’s, but those are harder to find, pricy, and need lots of machining to use in a 2.7. A 3.0 or 3.2 can be a good option as mentioned, but they’ve gotten more expensive. And no guarantee you wouldn’t need to rebuild that too. |
Just adding to my knowledge--does the 3.0 Carrera crank have 6 bolt flange or later 9-bolt flange? Any other differences to an SC crank?

The 3.0 Carrera case takes the earlier 6 bolt crank. Even a 2L crank fits.

Good luck finding a C3 case and crank. That will cost you more than a whole SC core engine.

Matt is correct, good luck finding the C3 bits. I sold a crank and case about 5 years ago, have not come across another one.
Why not just get the current case machined back to proper. We have used Ollies in the past countless years with excellent results up until the last one, where it was "ok" Neil Harvey, performance developments, has recently posted a thread regarding his shop's ability to turn cases around as well. Maybe reach out to him. Cheers |
