IMS thrust bearing problem??
 

Ok, my 1986 930 engine is built, and sitting on the engine stand as I slowly work through the cars electrical and fuel systems.
I found an interesting video series done by a shop on YouTube of a rebuild of a 1986 911 turbo.

They had an oil leak at the IMS bearing, the shoulder of the thrust face of the new Glyco bearing didn't fit in the case. This caused the case to gap on this end, and leak oil.
I just looked and I bought my IMS bearing in 2021 from 3ngine 8uilder 5upply 4acing...
PN 996 101 137 80. Glyco # 028005STD

I know the bottom end was fit checked by Nick, my machinist, and dry fit checked by me, I believe I even plasi gauged the bearings, but don't see pictures of this.
I didn't check this shoulder dimension though.

There was another thread recently on this, which was timely in my case as I am assembling an engine and checked my parts. My bearings did fit with space to spare on the flange. I checked the inner and outer flange clearance. Since it sounds like you are assembled already, you can easily check the outer flange clearance. Inner would be a litter tougher, but perhaps with a bore scope? Once you have eyes on it, it should be easy enough to see if the flanges are clearing the recess in the case. At least for mine it was visually obvious.

I went through all my build pictures last night, there are no good ones with the correct angle prior to closing the case. I will get the cover removed this week sometime and see what I can see. With a good light possibly I could see interference on the outer flange. Of course the shoulder of the shaft fills most of the hole.... I do not look forward to possibly tearing this engine down.

Quick question: did you have the case halves surfaced? The issue you are having has never been a problem for us. We never surface the case halves it at all possible.

Reducing the diameter of the thrust ring is a simple process.

No the case was not surfaced. I saw no evidence that this engine had ever been apart.

Seems to fit fine to me. Maybe a hair bigger, but doesn't hit on anything. Not even close.

Mine look like dannobee's. I do recall the other thread mentioning this issue with some bearings a while back, and saw the youtube video which did seem to confirm it. Maybe some bearings with incorrectly sized flanges were in supply for a time. Sounds like it wasn't widespread at least, so hopefully yours are fine. Luckily not hard to confirm at least for the outer one, and if it looks like dannobee's you should be good.
