What am I looking at here? Photos from engine rebuild . . .

Hi Pelicans:

I am continuing to review the old records and photos that came along with my Carrera 3.0 (equipped with its original 930/02 motor).

The engine was either rebuilt or just cleaned up and resealed. Either way, it was disassembled and the case was split. Hopefully the racing shop in Italy did the right thing and didn't reinstall old, worn parts. :) It is running strong and without issue, so there's that. The shop that tore down the motor did take a number of photos (piston heads; tensioner/chains; broken valve springs; etc.) so my gut says this isn't nothing.

There are two photos that I can't make sense of, attached below. What are we looking at here, good sirs? Thanks in advance.

Hi
Photos are of a cam box, including the oil spray tube.
The camshaft and inlet and exhaust rockers and shafts are not fitted/shown in the photos.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Thank you! Are you able to see any damage or issues?

Not sure why they bothered with this photo . . . The broken valve springs, I get.

It took me a few minutes to manipulate a cam carrier to get the right angles. Add to that the paper towel/rag that the cam carrier is being held with in the photo making it look like a broken casting. That threw me off, too.

The damage looks like it was from a broken part of the valve spring bouncing around in the space. From the angles they took the shots, it looks pretty minor. BTW, the failure occurred on either #3 or #4 valve spring (intakes were far more common to break, IME), but the broken part fell down and wedged itself in the exhaust valve area of the cam carrier, causing the damage.

By George…you’re right. That rag in the background really plays tricks. With your description, I can now see why the photo was in the file. Thank you very much! They should use that photo in eye tests of something, sheesh!

Photos later in the series show the case split and the work was done by a top notch shop. Assuming it was remedied (if that’s even possible), is it safe to say the minor cam carrier damage won’t come back to bite me?
