79 3.0 head reconditioning questions
hi pelicans, im currently trying to source parts for a complete stock rebuild of a 79 sc w 190k , and learning its more than just buying the one that says porsche on the label. is there a source w current information of the best products available. ive been digging in the forums and some threads are pretty old and some oem manufacturers have relocated and/or quality has changed. so far this what i came up w; intervalve for int/ext valves, patrick msprts for phos/brnz guides , porsche springs?or ln engineering?,mahle elephant ft, glyco rocker bushings or patrick mtrsprts forged rockers , clevite main and rod bearings, arp rod bolts, iwis chains, p/c 8.5:1 mahle nikosil(9.5 if no other changes needed, gonna buy waynes book in a minute hopefully something about that in there)dougherty regrind sc(some say go new only) all other parts will be porsche brand. i will get approval from machinist tomorrow before any purchase . am i anywhere near the mark? i appreciate any response. thnx

Did you talk to your machinist? Has he rebuilt numerous air-cooled Porsche engines in the past? Is this for a race or hot street engine, or more of a factory rebuild focusing on longevity over power?
Are you planning to give him a box full of new parts and expect him to use and warranty those if something goes bad? |

hi dannobee, im in the middle of machinist n don wise . don gave me names of his suppliers, all wholesale sites n wont let me shop. but i did mention some brands for parts to get a yay or nay. he confirmed i m on the right track. i ended up buying most of what i need for machinist to start. i m doin a completly stock sc motor for reliability. gary at champion engines in cambell is machinist n don around the corner is my advisor. i asked don if he wanted to build this thing n he said he has four to do now n cant start till spring. i have no problem waiting , but when i said i was planning on building it but gettin a little apprehensive because of high stakes (matching# n cost) he asked about my experience and told me i should do it. so here i am having fun w the "fun part"

If Champion Engines in Cambell are not experts specifically dedicated to air-cooled Porsche engines you're probably in for a rough ride.
As much as some people think "an engine is an engine" the air-cooled 911 engine is an animal all it's own. I've more people end up in a nightmare scenario choosing an adviser with expertise in general mechanics as apposed to an experienced Porsche guru. Supertec is the best choice for all things to do with 911 air-cooled engines. They are engine builders with in house machine shop and 4 decades of Porsche 911 exclusively. They even sell a few parts designed in house.
