Rebulid??
I have recently been having a few problems with my baby!
At start up she lets out a little smoke that usually disappears after 1 minute. After a long warm up she will let out a little smoke when idling, but only if she feels like it. If when I am stationary I blip the throttle, she will sometimes blow a little smoke when the revs are decreasing. And finally, when racing the engine (I'm not sure whether that's the best description) beyond 5000 rpm I get a feeling of a momentary loss of power...again this only happens occassionally. Any thoughts would be much appreciated Jacob Snell 87 Carrera |
Jacob,
The smoking could be just a little blow by the rings. Do you know how to check your oil level, as it might have a little bit too much oil in the car? Mine smokes a little on start up also. Call Pelican and invest in both of Waynes books. They are invaluable even if you do not plan on working on your own vehicle. I would also strongly suggest a Bentley's. |
Jacob,
The link below might help you decide. My 2,2 did all of the things that you mentioned so I'm rebuilding my right now. Once I got over that "It's a Porsche" syndrome it's been kinda fun. Wayne's books are really good. The costs of rebuilding these engines are pretty high. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_Engine_Rebuild/mult_engine_rebuild-1.htm |
Right - read the article, and the books, that will tell you in more detail whether you need to rebuild or not...

Thanks All,
You have only confirmed my worst suspicions. She is due for a 12,000 mile service so I will also carry out a cylinder leakage test at the same time - and leave it up to the professionals to re-build. Jacob:( |
Jacob,
Do research! You might be heading down an expensive path for nothing. There might be no reason to re-build at this point. Did you check the oil? Go on a nice drive to get the car up to operating temperature, park on a flat surface, make sure you do not have on anything that will hang down into the fan!, open the hood, check the oil level. If the oil level is higher than 1/2 way up the dip stick then your slight amount of smoking could be caused by having too much oil in the baby. Invest in the books ($150.00??) and it could save you thousands of dollars. |
David,
I checked the oil after a long blast at the weekend. It was running on about 1/4 of the way up, so I added a small amount in. I can live with a small amount of smoke every now again, I just can't handle the loss of power!!! Jacob |
