I pulled my fan off the altenator shaft to clean it up. I found a slot in the bore of the fan and a round slot in the shaft of the altenator. No Woodruff Key. I don't thik it was there. I looked on PP site and couldn't find it. I called PP and they couldn't find a number for it. I looked on my Pet5 software and couldn't find it. I recall reading that the fan is pressed on. I used a self made 2 bolt puller w/6mm bolts. It came off fairly easily. Is it possible that they omitted the key for some reason. I'm pretty sure that when you tighten the fan belt nut that it's tight enought to keep the shaft from spinning in the bore. There was no evidence that it was spinning. Anybody know about this? I found some key's at the hardware store that I'm going to try. No metric, but one might work. |

I'm 99% sure that there should be a woodruff key in there - it is probably considered a part of the alternator, that is why there is no Porsche part #. Look at this page:

Mine used the same key as the cams. Not sure if the SC would use the same key.

Yes there is a key, or should be. I found one at Ace hardware when I dropped mine on the garage floor and it disappeared

PET shows keyway p/n 900 118 006 00 (4 X 6.5) for thru '77 and keyway p/n 999 118 008 00 (size ?) for '84 + up. The technical reference catalog shows the same alternator p/n fitting '75 thru '83. So I would think you need the earlier keyway.

It's page 105-00 when looked up for as '77 or '84. It's not pictured, it's an unkeyed part number in the listing.

Thanks for solving the mystery.
I looked this up and saw it on Pet as well. I looked at the cam ke as was mentioned above. It's 4X5. How are these measured. I'm assuming the 4 is the width. 5 or 6.5 must be the height since the length would be much more. I think I found my missing key. I bought an assortment of about 4-5 at the hardware. They were english spec. They were listed by width and length. When I got home I dumped them out on the part's tray. (Actually a Plano fishing lure box.) I tried one, the width, thickness was perfect but too long and tall. Found a shorter one worked well. Then I found a dirty one in the pile. (I must have removed the fan off the altenator above this parts box and it dropped into the box!) Now that I have the right size , provided above, I can be certain. Thanks! It's also good to know that the hardware store version would probably work fine in a pinch.

William,
I have a spare key. I'll bring it over tonight when I return your tools.
