Fan & Housing

I recently took my 79 911 SC to have the fan replaced. It had been cracked and repair had been attempted, but to no avail. The fan was loose allowing some slop in the belt and the pulley to rattle. The mechanic (very highly respected in the Porsche market) tried several different fans and couldn't find one that fit. Finally after 3 weeks said that he found the car had never been updated. He said that all of these had there housings and fans updated and mine was the first he had seen in many years that had not been updated. Now it needs a housing that is over $1000 unless he can find one at a salvage yard. Does this sound right? I'm not familiar with any required or suggested upgrade or mod to the fan and housing. Please advise as I need to know how to proceed with the car repairs.

I'm not sure about "update", but the '78 and '79 SC's had a smaller (225mm) fan that spun at a faster speed to drive the higher output alternator. Starting with the '80 SC's, Porsche reverted to the 245 mm fans again.

I would contact a few NOS or wrecking yards to see what the cost of the parts would be. Personnally, one of the first places I would contact is Parts Obsolete.
