Oil pressure?
I just wanted to ask about oil pressure as a friend of mine just sold his 2.4 "S" but shortly before the sale the buyer had the car pre-purchase inspected by a general garage. The following is the examiner's report about oil pressure (I don't think he used compression or leak-down test):
Left bank cylinders 1,2,3 at top end appeared more noisy at fast idle than right hand bank. At tickover noise near equal. Oil pressure guage readings, engine running temp 80C: Tickover 1 BAR 3000 rpm only 3 BAR We have spoken to a Porsche main dealer, he stated tickover 1 BAR is a reasonable pressure, modern 911's only reach 1 to 1.5 BAR but oil pressure at 3000rpm should be 5 BAR. Our test vehicle's reading was only 3 BAR at 3000rpm. Please ensure vehicle is tested at Porsche main dealership first before purchase! Engine main bearings, big end bearings may be worn giving low pressure or (relief valve may be stuck. This is from technician at main dealer.) Engine oil pressure is low at indicated 3000rpm. We cannot recommend purchase due to engine oil pressure, if bearings in engine are worn thus giving low oil pressure much expense would be required to rectify this fault. Major bottom end repair would be necessary. Despite this report, the buyer still bought the car anyway. So do you agree that if the oil pressure is low, the bottom end is the problem? |

Correct oil pressure is 10-15 psi for every 1000 rpm. At 3000, that equals 30-45 psi, or 2-3 BAR.
The early cars, (pre '76) have a smaller pressure pump, and a larger scavenge pump. Those readings seem fine for a pre-'76 car.
