RIP 73 1/2 911T pistons/cylinders

I am presently rebuilding my 73 1/2 911T engine. My pistons/cylinders have gone to the other side and died after 30 years of faithful service. I have searched high and low for an exact replacement set which does not exist.

My question is this. What are the next best set of pistons and cylinders that I should consider since I can not get the original ones any longer and what are the pros and cons of your selection.

I really don't want to do engine modifications. thanks in advance for the advice.

Keep an eye on e-bay. A while back there was a NOS set up for auction. Also try Gary at Parts Obsolete (www.partsobsolete.com).

I would go with JE pistons, and the original cast iron cylinders, bored out to match the pistons. Its the least expensive and best way to go as far as I know.

The JE pistons are second to none.

The cylinders are just as good, when refinished. Make certain that a Plateau hone or grape type hone is used as the final step. Your machine shop should be able to help there. Otherwise go to Ollies machine shop in Santa Ana, CA or Competitin Engineerings Shop in CA for the pistons and cylinder work. Both these machine shops are first rate, listen to any recommendations they may have.

I sent my pistons and cylinders to Walt at Competition Engineering a few days ago. I have not heard back from him yet. The problem with going to JE is time now. I don't want my engine sitting in hundreds of pieces at the shop on dead time so what I am asking is what pistons and cylinders can I use that I can get right now OUT OF A BOX in stock that will work well with a 73 1/2 911T CIS since the originals are not available. Expense is not an issue as much as time.

I suspect that the JE's are on the shelf. the cylinders you already have. Let us know what combo you end up with at walts.

Jack---got a call from a parts house today that said they located a brand new pair in Germany. I think I have resolved it. Will know for sure in about two weeks.
