Boring Nikasil Cylinders

Is it possible to bore porsche nikasil cylinders. Say 95mm 3 litre ones out to 98mm, and then have them replated?

Yes, I'm pretty sure this is possible. I think anything larger than 98mm gets dicey though.

Thanks Wayne. I wasn't sure how much meat her is in a 95mm cylinder bore. There is a company here in Australia offering a boring and replating service, using a ceramic/silicon compound which they say is harder than nikasil. They do racing motorbike engines, car engines etc. I have contacted them recgarding there service and whether they have ever done any porsche work? I'll keep you posted.

It sounds like the surface would be similar to Nikasil but you should check with them on the material that the rings should be made of. Different cylinders sometimes require different ring material for proper break in.

US Chrome and EBS (Engine Builder's Supply) both do replating...

The company is Electrosil (www.Electrosil.com.au), and they do bore and replate Porsche cylinders. They're in Briar Hill Melbourne (Australia). If you want a rebore they would require the oversized pistons to do a proper job. The cost is $350AU for replating and $55AU for reboring, so by the time you add oversized pistons, rings and pins, it may just be cheaper to get them from the US. Do you know of anyone in Australia that makes custome forged pistons.
