If it smokes when...
Does someone have a chart setup to help diagnose what is wrong with an engine based on when/how it smokes?
It was smoking a bit on startup. Then it started smoking when turning/banking to the left. Now it's smoking a small amount under accelleration, but loads under heavy decel. I also seem to be getting a bit of blow by. Rings? Guides? Compression test will be next, in a couple of days. This is originally a 2.0T type engine (914/6) upgraded to 2.2 with either E or S cams (PO is not sure). The smoking and blowby became much worse when I recently replaced the leaking rear main seal. Smoking from heavy decel is usually worn valve guides. Oil gets sucked into the chamber threw the guides upon decel.
The smoke on startup also can be caused by worn guides. |
Run a leakdown test, and you should be able to hear where it's coming from (valves or rings, left or right)...
