No smoke from a rebuilt motor, is this right?
As some of you may know, I just installed my rebuilt 3.0L and started it last night. Well, I was expecting it to smoke on the first start up, because the rings are not seated. I warned the neighbor and the wife that it was going to smoke once I started it until the rings seat. So I fired it up, it spit, coughed, and sputtered a few times but , no smoke.
WHY? Should it have smoked a little ? The wrench told me that with new rings smoking on start up IS normal. Thanks Rick |
Hi Rick:
LOL,......A brand new engine will smoke on startup depending upon how much oil the engine builder used on the pistons & rings in the assembly process,... :) Oil consumption will be higher than normal until the rings have full seated and that can take some time, depending on the technique and driving habits of the owner. |
Eh, could be okay. A little smoke is good, and a sulfur smell is normal. I can't recall any rebuilt engines smoking like an old worn out one...
