What aluminum case can I use in place of a 7R for a 2.7 rebuild? Can I use a 3.0 case?

Good question, there are only two options for cases that will still accept the 2.7 crankshaft. The first, and more common solution, is the early 911 sand cast case used through 1968. You can typically find these for about $600-800. However, you need to have the case machined in order to use some 2.7 components. Specifically piston squirters need to be installed if running Nikasil cylinders, and you also need to weld on bosses for the CIS throttle linkage setup, if you keep the CIS setup. Oil pump bypass and a few other standard case upgrades also apply.

The second approach is to use a 3.0 Turbo or Euro Carrera case. This is the only case that is very similar to the 2.7 and uses the same crank, but also has the cylinder stud spacing in the larger size to accept 3.0 and 3.2 cylinders. You can build a short-stroke 2.8 with this engine by using the smaller crankshaft from the early cars (2.0/2.2) and the larger pistons and cylinders from the later cars (3.0 or 3.2).
