AAARG! Stupid Piston Squirters!!!!
Okay,
Someone please tell me I'm doing something wrong because I realy don't want to send my case back for more work. I have a 2.7, 7R. EBS did the casework to include cleaning and testing the piston squirters. Even says so in the form letter, "The piston bottom squirters have been checked for functionality." But when I test them I can only get Cyl#4 to work. So here's what I did. Tested them all, 1-3 by spraying brake cleaner in the hole at the top in the through bolt hole, 4-6 by mostly plugging the through bolt hole with a piece of fuel line hose, then spraying brake cleaner in the bearing journal hole. The hose was a bit loose, but close. Results: got nothing at all out of 1-3,5,6, but 4 squirted out like I had expected. So, I read an earlier thread about pressures opening a valve in there, So I try using the air compressor. Again, I get air out of #4 but none of the others. So I'm done for the weekend. And with shipping probably for another three weeks. I'll call EBS racing on Monday, but just incase I'm missing something, anyone know what else I should try? Pat |
There is a check ball and spring inside the squirter cover, they should only allow one way flow from the oil gallery out into the crankcase.

Also takes about 3 bar to open them, IIRC.

I'd be more suspicious of the one that "worked" (#4) than the others. The check valve is (I believe) supposed to keep them from squirting at low oil pressure - like idling.
I use a piece of teflon rod (though a wooden dowel might work) to plug the gallery and an air gun with a rubber tip to apply the air. If you do this be careful. That dowel can shoot out like a rocket when pressure is applied. Don't ask me how I know. :rolleyes: -Chris |
the squirters open at about 3 bar...if #4 is the one that works, block #4 next time you apply pressure... see if the other squirters work. These are realy simple pieces..just a spring and a ball.
Also your just spraying brake cleaner? 3 bar is quite a bit more than a spray can might produce..plug up the oil passages with something, then fill with some sort of fluid... then apply air pressure...bet you see the squirters working http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1064106613.jpg |
Bill: Yes I was trying to go from the throughbolt holes out the squirter and from the bearing journal hole to the squirter while blocking the oil through bolt.
JP: I used 65 lbs from the air compressor with a poor seal, that should be at least 3 bar ? Chris: Thanks for the warning, I did the same thing with a rubber hose. Darn near hit the wife who was a few feet away spotting me :) Tim: I was under the impression each clylinder was fed by the oil hole on the rail it is set in Is that wrong? If so that would be my problem for sure. Let me expalin that better... for cyl#4, the piston squirter is set in a "rail" that runs up & down. At the top is the oil through bolt and this must be blocked. I then squirt cleaner into the hole on the same rail in the bearing journal and it comes out the squirter. I then moved the plug down to #5 and shoot cleaner into the bearing journal at #5. I then get nothing coming out. Is that process wrong? Are the squirters all conncted together or is each one tied to the rail it is set in? Pat PS: I'm going to get some tighter fitting hose and a rubber tip for my compressor so I can make sure I am getting good seals on everything tomorrow. |
3 bar is about 45 psi.

Plan B worked great.
I wrapped my hose in electrical tape, lubed it and tapped it in nice and tight with a small hammer. I then filled the holes with cleaner, used my compressor set for 55 lbs with a rubber tip (I figured 10 over wouldn't be a bad thing...) And they all worked great!!! Squirted nice streams with some misting (assuming misting is since cleaner is much less thick than oil). So I'm off to start my bottom end assembly after another 4 hours of case cleaning. I swear I have close to 50 hours in parts cleaning so far :) |

Does this happen to you guys? About once a year I do an engine an engine and while I'm cleaning (and cleaning and cleaning it) I think "I don't thing I want to do another motor." After I finish the motor and some time goes by and I forget what a pain the cleaning (and media blasting and painting, etc) was and I do another motor.
When you get down to it I think this motor stuff is 90% work and only 10% "fun". -Chris |
I am about to do this same oil squirter check on my 3L project.
Is there a good thread that shows the oil pressure system diagram? I would like to gain a deeper understanding of this system. Thanks |

Stomski Racing makes a specialized air nozzle that forces the ball valves open. Cleaner and oil can be pushed out by the pressurized air. It can confirm that each nozzle is opening.
