Porshe 911 euro Questions
I have an opportunity to buy my wife's Boss's 1978 911 he brought over from Europe. He has not driven it since 99 and his wife says it has to go!
The body etc is in great condition with 74K miles and he is the original owner. BUT he did absolutely nothing to properly store the car. It has been sitting in the garage with boxes on it since 1999! What has to be done to get it up and running so I can drive it and decide whether or not to buy it? What potential engine problems should I be concerned about, and look for? Also, can anyone give me an estimated value? Again, he bought in Europe, there is a tag on the inside driver's door that states "Made in West Germany Kunstharzlack 908-8-2". Any information, or history would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. |

There's lots of information out there about reviving an engine that hasn't been stored improperly. Do a search.

I'm afraid that is just the paint sticker. They all have those regardless of where sold. All were made in West Germany before the Belin wall came down. Now just Germany. The engine code would be better. If it is a '78, it probably has the original 930/03 engine..180 hp/189in lb-ft torque. Nothing really special (all Porsches are special), but a good, competent, bulletproof engine with the more simple CIS. This is a good engine to hotrod because it has the larger ports and less smog equip. Add SSIs and sport muffler...if it doesn't have them already...and you have a pretty hot car. One thing to keep in mind is that these are expensive cars to repair. Where you can get a rebuilt engine for most cars for about $2000, Expect to pay closer to $10000 for a professionally rebuilt porsche engine. Search the thread for repair costs. Porsches are great cars to drive....Unless, of course, they are practically giving the car away, your best bet is to get it running and take it to a Porsche mechanic to evaluate it's condition before buying. That will give you time to find out more about the car...if you post more info, maybe we can help you estimate value better.

Eelpie,
Welcome aboard! Here is a link to a few threads covering the topic of starting up a car that has been in storage. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/sear...rder=descending If I were you Id have the car inspected by a reputable PORSCHE Mechanic to give you a Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) after you get her fired up that is. They can let you know all the issues with a car so you don’t get any surprises later on. If you do a search on the site for PPI and read a few threads you will realize how important they are. Also if you didn’t already know EURO 911's are usually more sought after since they have slightly better HP numbers and few other reasons which I cant think of right now. Good luck with the car! |
