Engine Wont Start!!!!!!
Got my 2.7 rebuilt and in the car. Engine started and ran for less than a min and stopped.
Couldnt get it started after that just craked over normally. Did compression check on #1 , and was good, went to do #4 and the engine stopped cranking. The engine is back out again and seems to be seized. Any ideas what could be the problem??????:confused: |
Did you do an prestart crank with the ignition or fuel system disabled, build and confirm oil pressure before starting and running for the first time? What was the stop like after a minute like? Abrupt or did it appear to be running out of fuel? How long did you crank it after it stopped? Is your CIS airflow switch connected? Could be "hydro" locked with fuel if you're lucky or stopped with a seized bearing at the other extreme. Jim

Just curious, did you have the bottom end machined i.e. line bored?

I did get oil pressure before i started it. It ran but not smoothly, seem to pop a bit and then stopped. It could crank it over after that but it would not start. Checked for fuel and for spark and both were good. Then was checking compression and it was cranking nicley, but got slower and then stopped. Thought it might be the battery getting low but after charging it no change. But there was a smell of fuel. Have the engine out now, i was going to take the valve covers off and see if all the valves were ok, any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks |

Did you have the fuel system disabled (fuel pump relay pulled) when you were doing the compression checks? Jim

I did not do the compression checks myself, they were done at the shop where it is now, i think at first they did not have the pump relay out, but did mention about fuel smell !!!!

I'd remove the plugs and see if the engine can be turned over by hand. If not, you may have a valve timing problem or a seized bearing. There is a possibility a bearing did not get oil (I'm assuming the engine was put back together with assembly lube and all the bearing clearances were checked with plastigage or equivalent) or was contaminated with polishing compound or had all the lubrication washed off or the oil diluted by gasoline from excessive cranking with the fuel system running or the fuel system running when the ignition is on without the engine running (CIS air flow switch disconnected or defective). The gasoline problem is less likely but still a possibility. Good luck, Jim
