Clutch, tranny, ?????

I'm really confused now. I put my motor back in my 72 and forgot to align the throwout fork with the throwout bearing. I couldn't get the clutch to grab, i.e., it always appeared disengaged. Fine, I pulled the motor down, lined everything up using a flashlight and a little mirror, bolted it back together, adjusted the clutch, and I still can't seem to engage any gear.

The linkage seems to work fine, I can move through all the gears and the tranny feels like it is "notching" into each of the gears. However, regardless of what gear I have the tranny in, the wheels spin freely. I just had the tranny rebuilt, so I sure as heck hope that its not the tranny.

What am I missing here? Is there any way the pressure plate could some how not be applying pressure to the disc? Is there some special procedure that you need to go through to get gears to engage after having a tranny rebuilt? I'm lost.

I'm not sure this applies to 911s, but on other cars, if you install the clutch plate backwards, the plate won't clamp between the pressure plate and flywheel.

Something could be happening (or not happening) inside the gearbox as well, but I don't know. Let's hope not.

are you running the car, or just manually spinning the wheels? you didn't really say. they will turn by hand due to the spider gears in the diff, but if it goes into each gear and won't drive the car, then maybe the fork is still behind the T/O bearing, which might cause the disc to spin free. kind of unusual though. does the clutch pedal feel normal?

Yes, I'm just spinning them by hand. I had a thought in the back of my mind that maybe I was missing something simple like that.

Well, If I can figure out how to get my starter working again (different post!), I'll see if the gears engage with the motor running.

Thanks.
