Wayne Are These Prices Correct????

In the Rebuild Wizard I found this:

Rod Holder Set, P221 $121.00
Chain Holder, P222 $122.50

This can't be right. In your rebuild book you mention the entire set of both the rod holders and chain holders being around $22.00. For $22.00 I might buy them, if not I can always make them myself. What's the correct price?

Kurt,
There are much more important tools you will need for your rebuild. The items you mention are easily made from simple strips of light gauge sheet metal. I have the dimensions on file (somewhere).

Actually Wayne's rebuild book has the dimensions. As for the other tools, I've already ordered the engine yolk, dial indicator and z-block, special tool for the cam nuts. The other tools needed I already have.

That appears to be the current price from Porsche on the chain holder tools. I have no control over what Porsche charges. I guess we'll have to start having those made...

Guess I'll be making those tools myself.

?

Anything come of this? Or am I going to have to make my own? (for the rods and the chain)

You've got a vise, right? Just make your own. About $5 in material (Home Depot) and a half hour is all it takes. I beleive the dimensions can be found in Wayne's book.

Good Luck,
Jim

Like Jim said you can make them yourself out of sheet metal. Hell, after seeing the prices for the factory tools, I ended up making mine out of some stiff cardboard and duct tape! They worked just fine and didn't cost me anything but the time to make them.

CreatuR 09-06-2004 07:20 AM

Ah, didn't realize the dimensions were in his book. I guess I failed to read that part. Thanks!

I used the cheapa** approach. Coat hangers. Cost $0.00 Assembly time 5 min.

Wayne 962 09-06-2004 04:27 PM

Yes, those are rediculous prices from Porsche - I don't expect to sell another set...

Porsche Workshop Manual Pricing

Has anybody priced out the 72 on workshop manual for the 911? I believe that it is now near $500 for Vol 3 to 6. Why has the price gone up so high? Two years ago, you could pick up the manual for about $180.
