Now in 993 land ...

Core engine pricing?
What would you guys pay for an SC 3.0 core engine, completely, assembled including EFI on a palette with no warranty and history? If you weren't in a hurry that is?
Thanks, George |

I've seen them from as low as $3300 to as high as $4500 from Dart Auto who will give you a 1 month guarantee.
Core is worth about $1000 if you know absolutely nothing about it. I figure $4000 if you can see it run. On a crate with no history is a risk. |

Can you run a leakdown test on it? No warranty, no history & no testing then you have to assume it needs a rebuild.

A lot of shops will pay $2500 for a complete 3.0 "core" (nonrunning). For a good running and verifiable 3.0 as much as $5000. Fresh rebuild, documented, no more than the rebuild cost usually.
What do you mean by EFI? It should have CIS injection, if not I would want some history.

I wouldn't pay more than $2K for a core 3.0L engine. That would be gambling that the parts inside are simply worn out and can be reconditioned (good crank, etc.)...

Yes Wayne but most people, including Porsche shops, arent regulars at Pomona or have access to so many resources.
When I was selling my engine, I had offers from shops between $2200 and $2800, 140k and a broken head stud. Ran great but defiantly was ready for some attention.

I wouldn't pay anything more that what you figure your could get selling the parts you can verify. IE: Intake, fuel sytem, exhaust, electrical parts, fan & housing......ect. Probably ~$1000. If you cannot verify engine components you are taking a huge risk. Having said that, It's not to hard to verify some parts, does it turn over by hand? (I always like to oil it up before trying). Remove valve covers, look for broken studs, nuts, valve components ect... compression test ect.....Pull spark plugs look inside (an engine scope helps here) look for anything unusual ect...price goes up according to how much you can verify. If engine had failure, lots of internal parts can be effected and can be either not worth, or impossible to salvage.
