Rouge Cylinder?

I have a set of P&C’s, 5 of them have the stamping on the jug as in the photo. (sorry the camera won’t focus at that distance). One has a fainter stamping of B with either 0 over 3 or 0 over 5 on the left. There are no numbers on the other side, but I’ll check with a magnifying glass to make sure.

The 5 cylinders have casting marks of W 15 after an identical string of numbers before it. And the one odd ball stamped cylinder has W 16 cast on it.

One of my machinists said to check the deck height number group on the base of the cyls. Which one is it and how so I decipher them to make sure I don’t have a bastard cyl.

The set was bought off of e-bay. The box had been unsealed. The seller said they were new and they look new. But they don’t match up. What gives?

Would Mahle mix up castings in a set along with a different stampings?

Not sure what year you have, but see my post below with regards to a 70/71 2.2. The little spec book says the height group is the number inside a triangle. I don't think the casting mark is anything to worry about as machining happens afterward.

I got a magnifying glass out and looked at the stampings. The stampings don't jive with the few people I've talked to as the keep referring to a triangle for the height group. There are no triangles on my set. There are only these letter number combinations. I haven't the foggiest of what they mean.

But the good thing is that the different cast cylinder does have the same number letter combination as the other five. There is the B in the center surrounded by 0 over 5 on the left and I made out a 1 on the right on the bottom. It was very faint but it was of the same font as the other five. I could not make out the 0 that should have been above it on the right. It looks like the stamp wasn't square to the cyl.

You need to look on another section of the cylinder to find the stamping with the triangle. It is real easy to miss. Here is a picture of one of mine:

Thanks for the photo clarification. These match pretty much exactly to the ones I took off the car.

I have contacted Mahle USA and they have forwarded the questions to Germany.

I'll share the answers.
