need help to id stud/nut combo on page...
while exploring a upcoming starter R&R i was hit in the face by a drop of oil. the leak was coming from a M8 stud with a 13mm nut (driver's side). it is pictured on page 49 in "101 projects for your porsche 911" upper left hand pic, #7. (the small nut/stud next to the oil return port). mine had loosen to the point of almost backing off. i tightened it by hand and was barely turning it with a small box wrench, when, "CLICK!" i heard it click!! and felt it too. i think it was the aluminum sleeve seating. but i am definately puckered. i didnt even torque on it. what is this and what is it attached to on the inside. i assume anyone who has worked on a rebuild will know. thanks you all!

Yup, this stud often pulls out of the case. It's the one located near the intermediate shaft, and I recommend getting this one reinforced with a case-saver when the engine is rebuilt.
Does this spell doom for your engine? Not necessarily - try removing it, cleaning it, and using a bit of sealant on it. It shows that your case is stressed, and probably will show signs of pulled head studs soon (I'm assuming it's a 2.7 or something close). Of cours soon could be 10 miles or 20,000 miles. Seal up the leak and forget about it until the next problem comes along... -Wayne |
