Rebuilding 911SC 3.0
I am rebuilding my1978 911SC 3.0L. I have found MAHLE Pistons and cylinders (9.3:1) for $2200. I have aslo found nicosil plated cylinders with JE pistons (9.5:1) for $1800. Does anyone out there, with experience in rebuilding a motor , think I might be able to find a better deal. Also any input on which set of pistons and cylinders might be best is greatly appreciated. Thank you...

I just picked up Mahle US pistons from Vertex for 1400 on e-bay. Give them a call and see what they can do for you. I have a build sheet that I'm working with them on this. I don't know if they have any left but it's worth a call. I'm spending about 4000 (including the P&C) on everything I'm getting from them for this build so that may be why I'm getting such a good deal. It's worth a call to them and they have treated me well. Make sure you talk to one of the folks there who will work with you. They like big orders and work better with folks who are bringing them a lot of business.
Sorry Pelican but a good deal is a good deal.

Pkroy, look at it this way, in the whole cost of the engine rebuild, $400 more really isn't that much. When I was looking for pistons, several pros whose opinions I value all said the same thing: Mahle. Tom |

This is probably a conversation that I don't want to continue but the language made me respond.
Pelican wants $2800 for something the competitors want much less for. I think Pelican would want to know that they are being significantly under bid. As for using this forum to talk about prices, I don't see people complaining about buying used from this forum when Pelican sells it new. Where do you drawl the line? Maybe I should have just done the PM route; that was my mistake. But the "holier than thou" attitude has no place.

$400 is a small amount to pay extra for a better quality part if it comes to engine building. Go with the Mahles. The quality and precision fit is unbeatable. I don't think 2200 is out of line either. JE pistons may be fine, but I'd keep them in mind for a budget rebuild where you may just need new pistons.
