List of Recommended Shops...

I have posted my list of recommended rebuild and machine shops to my 101Projects site:

http://www.101projects.com/911-Rebuild/recommedations.htm

If you can think of any others that I may have left out, let me know...

Mike Daino of PowerTech Porsche in Rockaway, NJ.

I would add Atlantic Enterprise for "normal" head work (valve jobs and twin plugging). All Bob does are heads. Reasonable prices and quick turnaround. Heads that don't need new valves (unless he has them in stock) are typically turned around in 2 days.

how about some shops up north from you wayne? in the SF bay area.

Pat S 10-27-2003 02:40 PM

Jon at EBS. (http://www.ebsracing.com) Very customer freindly and experienced. He talked me through every step of the machine work he was going to perform on my case, P/Cs and rods; and continued helping me with assembly questions. He did everything but my heads and cams. I'd use him again with no questions. Quick turn around, his estimates on time were accurate and half of what Walt estimated due to backlog. He also had very good pricing, quotes were complete and accurate for everything.

German Precision (Ted Robinson) in Sunnyvale!

Doug Zielke 10-27-2003 03:40 PM

Second to Jon at EBS.
Quality stuff. Quality operation. Timely and efficient.
They have been around the scene, supporting Porsche D-I-Y'ers, for a long time.

My votes go to Ollies and EBS. Both top notch. Wish there was someone good here in FL. At least we have Brumos.

We need a few more choices in So Cal.:D
How feasible is it to ship off heads to one of these guys to do the work on a top end rebuild for example?

I second Supertecpeformance! I just had a custom 3.0 liter built and installed this week in my '74. Could not ask for better service or more professional install... The engine is beautiful and a screamer! They back their work with a 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty too!

I couldn't have been happier with the guys that handled my machining, and component rebuilding. The company is Midwest Eurosport Racing, and they're in Bensenville, IL (western Chicago susburb). I had my heads rebuilt, case checked/cleaned, crank polished, cam towers checked/rebuilt, flywheel resurfaced, and P/C's cleaned, checked, and re-honed. They only did the work that was neccessary for a good rebuild, and if they didn't do something, they explained why. George Weathered was the guy who did all my work. Midwest Eurosport was on the local PCA recommendation list.

Dave is excellent, my dealings with them have been 100% perfect.

jgparker 11-11-2003 02:35 PM

I'll second Werkshop as a good shop, but they send all there machine work to Ollies in CA.

Pat S 11-11-2003 02:41 PM

So Wayne, You have a bunch of posts for various folks. What criterea are you using to make a place reccomended? Just curious.

mark 74 carrera 11-11-2003 04:58 PM

Thats because there is nobody local here in FL that we would trust with 911 machine work. :D

I've actually grown uncomfortable with this thread. At least one of the shops that are listed has been reported to me as being "crooks" by a very legit source.

I will only recommend the shops that are on my own list on my website.

FYI, Otto's does have a good reputation (John Williamson), and does good work, if you can work with them...

-Wayne

TedSlick 11-14-2003 07:59 AM

Wayne,

You being nearby in L.A., have you heard mention of any good shops in San Diego?

Wayne 962 11-15-2003 02:46 AM

I have heard a few good things about Black Forest, but I have never dealt with them personally...

-Wayne

kstar 11-15-2003 10:43 AM

FWIW, I give Black Forest a big thumbs up.

They did a lot of work for me and did a great job. I am sure there are many more data points (happy folks) that will hopefully chime in here.

BR,

Kurt

TedSlick 11-15-2003 02:49 PM

Thanks :)

toolman 11-18-2003 04:52 AM

Autocraft Motorsports in Toledo, OH did a great job on my head rebuild. They have all the latest equipment and most of what they do is air cooled engines I.E. Porsche and VW.

Wayne 962 11-18-2003 06:39 AM

One more note. If you do find a shop that seems okay, read my book, and ask them a few esoteric questions about the stuff I cover in there. If they don't know what you're talking about - go elsewhere. ("Duh, what's an oil pump bypass?")...

:)

I can understand why considering its now loosely tied back to your reputation. Thanks for listing the shops though...I'd feel much better sending stuff off to one of the shops you've listed.

I have to put a plug in for Chris at Autobahn Extremist in Rocky River, OH (just outside of Cleveland, West side). They do great work and he stands behind his work.
