broken timing chain?!(large pics)

I picked up a core 2.2e engine over the weekend and I was told it was a broken timing chain. I was pretty skeptical but sure enough that's exactly what I found. Ideas on how bad it will be?http://corellia.uncg.edu/jamies/DSC00002.JPG http://corellia.uncg.edu/jamies/DSC00006.JPG

I wonder what happened when the chain broke?

I'm not sure but I didn't find any broken rockers. I'm hoping I can just top end this motor and drive it while I work on other things (suspension, interior, etc) but if worst comes to worst at least I'll have core cylinders for 85mm pistons.

Was it a master link chain, or a one piece?

Tim Walsh 11-10-2003 11:28 AM

I think masterlink but can't tell for sure until I fish out the other side of the link.

The teeth on that cam sprocket look really pointy. I'm thinking improperly-set sprocket depths, which wore out the sprockets and placed excessive side loads on the chain. Chain finally gave up.

If the intermediate shaft sprocket wore similarly, I think you'll have to split her open, unfortunately.
