Is This a 'Book' Typo?
Page 143 (RHS column, 2/3 of the way down) of Waynes Engine Rebuild Book says
"The gaps in the two compression rings should be located roughly opposite from each other on the piston, and NOT lined up with the piston wrist pin." With the oil ring gap at the top, and the two compression rings on the sides then they they ARE lined up with the wrist pin aren't they? |
The part that confused me was figure 4-7 which actually points at the wrist pin as the correct location for the compression ring gaps. I've heard either way if fine. My Deves rings recommended the 9 o'clock 3 o'clock 12 oclock orientation, so that is what I went with.

Since there are 3 ring gaps to set...I usually put them at 120 deg .
So the oil ring goes at the top...the next is 120 around towards the bottom...and the top is at the other side near the bottom. This has worked OK for me for a long time. Bob |
