Welding cranks
I have an early 2.0-2.2 crank that is undersized and I was wondering if you can weld and remachine these journals? Who does this kind if work on the six cylinder cranks? Has anyone changed strokes this way?
Thanks, neilca |

I'm not sure if Porsche cranks can be done this way but the process is done by spraying on molten metal or by actually welding the crank on a rotating fixture then in both cases, turning them down.
The crank should be straightened afterwards...and rehardened (nitrided). Expensive processes...both of them...and probably not much guarantee. Bob

Welding of cranks happens all the time with the 4 cylinder engine. They change strokes even shape the journals to use VW or Chevy connecting rods. Can this be done with the six cylinder crank?

Does anyone know a source for nitriding? I looked on the internet a few months ago and discovered most places have discontinued the service, at least in the U.S. Perhaps environmental issues. Tuftriding was a good alternative since the temperature of the heat treatment was low enough to avoid heat distortion (e.g. shaft bends).

you should be able to find a 2.0 crank for a couple hundred bucks. WAY less than a reweld job. put an ad in the 911 parts wanted forum.
