Your thoughts on my engine findings

Hi all,

Some of you know I'm rebuilding my 2.7 engine. Well the reason it's apart is because the number 3 big end rod bearing failed.

The engine has the '76 style oil pump but does NOT have the oil bypass mod performed on the case. What is the impact of this with the newer style pump?

I sent the case in to be cleaned and while it was there they removed the oil relief pistons. I noticed that the pistons are the 'new' type that Wayne mentions in his book i.e., they do NOT have the holes in them.

Now isn't that a strange combination? Might this have contributed to my bearing failure?

So I'm thinking I'll get the oil bypass mod done and get a set of oil cam restrictor plugs (as the book recommends).

The other question I have is whether I should re-use my oil pump or go for a 964 pump. Can one buy new internals for a pump?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Tristan

The oil bypass is a really good mod, even with the old pump. If your rebuilding a 2.7, you have very little choice but to do a fair amount of machine work to the case anyway, so have them do the mod while they are at it. Are you sure it is not already done?

I am convinced it is not done. But what about the new style relief pistons without the mod?

Bump. Wayne? Anyone?
