exhaust stud tool
 
Is the exhaust stud tool just a long 8mm hex socket, or is there something extra special about it?

You got it. I just got mine at Sears (believe it was an 8" long wrench) and used a socket with an extension on it over the short leg of the wrench for a bit of leverage.

Thanks, I thought so, although "the tool" looks a little thicker and may be stronger I think I'll try my luck with a cheaper alternative.

don't forget to use oxy/acet on the nuts first.

You mean heat? or is oxy/acet an abbreviation for something else?

Yes he means heat. You need to heat each of the nuts up cherry red and let them cool down. Do this at least twice. Then using the hex wrench slightly tighten the nut then slowly remove. Don't worry about the strenght of the wrench. Even the cheapest one is stronger than the exhaust studs. Be patient and take your time.

I got away with using a mapp gas set from Home Depot. Heated them up cherry red and loosend them while they cooled down. Kurt's idea sounds better. THe mapp gas (oxy tank/mapp tank) also worked for removing the dilavar case studs.

all this talk of heat means that an exhaust is hell to remove with the motor in the car?

I know it can be done in the car but I wouldn't want to be lying on my back with a hot torch a few inches from my face. With any luck my engine is coming out this weekend!
